Alice Walker Story ”Everyday Use” Sample Essay

The lives of the characters in Alice Walker’s narrative “Everyday Use” have rather large differences. The three chief characters are “Mama. ” Maggie. and Dee. The events that occurred in each other’s lives developed turning up in a alone scene. Mama ne’er made it out of the 2nd class so hence she was less educated. Dee made it to college and was ever smarter than Mama and Maggie. Maggie was ever self-aware turning up because of the cicatrixs and Burnss she received from the fire. Mama was non the traditional female parent. Alternatively of being in the house raising the kids. cookery and cleansing. she was a strong built female parent. She milked the cattles. bragged about how good of a huntsman she was. and how fast she can clean the dead animate being.

“In existent life I am a big. big-boned adult female with unsmooth. man-working custodies. ” ( Walker 5 ) It shows how strong of a adult female she is after being hooked by a cow. “I used to love to milk boulder clay I was hooked in the side in ’49. ” ( Walker 13 ) Her girl Dee was the complete antonym. Dee had really high assurance. and thought she was better than Maggie and Mama. Her assurance gave her the ability to “stare down any catastrophe. ” “She thinks her sister has ever her life in the thenar of one manus. that “no” is a word the universe ne’er learned to state to her. ” ( Walker 2 ) Dee has strong hatred for the house from all of the bad memories she had turning up as a kid. and how she resented Mama because she was pushed to make everything. Another difference that sets aside Dee from her female parent and Timler 2

household heritage is when she asks Mama for the comforters. Throughout the narrative Dee merely cares about herself so there must be a ground she wants the comforters. It isn’t because she wants to maintain her families’ heritage traveling. it is most likely for some sort of show. Mama offered Dee a comforter before she went away to college. but Dee refused to accept it. In my sentiment she merely wants one now in order to profit her in some manner. Maggie is a really diffident. self-aware single. “She has been like this. mentum to chest. eyes on the land. pess in a shuffling. of all time since the fire burned the other house to the land. ” ( Walker 9 ) Maggie is covetous of her sister Dee and how everything was so easy in life for her. Maggie is a sort individual and it shows when she was willing to allow Dee take the comforters when Mama said no and Maggie dropped the home bases out of choler.

The physical scene of the narrative gives us a mental illustration of how of import household heritage was to the household and ascendants. This scene reflects the attitudes of Dee and Mother reasonably good. Dee is more in melody with the educational side of history and heritage while Mother merely has a 2nd class instruction. Mother wants material to remain in the household and if Dee truly wanted the comforters she would hold accepted one when she went off to college. Walker emphasizes the item of their heritage through the furniture. comforters. and the house. Another thing that Dee wanted to take was the dasher. “It was beautiful light xanthous wood. from a tree that grew in the pace where Big Dee and Stash had lived. ” ( Walker 54 ) It says that Mother intentionally turned her back on the house. but I think she merely said that because she was ashamed. She didn’t want to experience ridiculed when Dee came back to the house. Dee says she would pull off to come see Mother and Maggie no affair where they choose to populate. Mother and Dee both contradict themselves in the narrative by depicting parts of the house and pace that they like. and parts that they hate. The writer doesn’t indicate that one or the other is wholly right about their feelings for the house and pace.
